Y’all- I’m ecstatic that it’s Friday.  I am, really.  And this is a happy post- but am I the only one who bawled my eyes out last night watching Parenthood?!  Matt and I love Julia and Joel and to be honest, we felt like we related to them a lot- but they are breaking my heart right now.  Come on, Joel!

Okay now that’s out of my system- let’s do this!

ONE I am SO EXCITED because our annual college girlfriend trip is officially on the calendar!!! (!!!!!) My sweet friends live all over the country now and I have been pleasantly surprised with our ability to keep up with each other.  We meet every other week on Google hangout if we can make it, but being able to squeeze their necks is something I crave.  The super fun part for me is they are coming to Wilmington!!  Some with baby in tow!!!  I cannot wait to play hostess and show them around my new home.  No amount of exclamation points can accurately describe my joy in anticipation.

This came in the mail this week.  Let’s just call it a birthday gift to myself.  Y’all know how much I wanted this/ needed any kind of planner to stay organized.  Then, Brittany posted there were only 4 remaining.  I jumped on that one!  And now it’s here and it’s glorious.  Yay!

It is supposed to be frigid, but sunny weather here this weekend [by my standards].  Along with my big girl pants- I’ll be donning lots of layers to brave the winter cold in hopes of exploring the area with my sweetie!  Our weekends off together are usually few and far between so we try to make the most of it.  I doubt there will be any beach walking since it is 4 times windier- but we will see what we can get into!

Have you been to the Target $1 section yet?  Because the adorable Valentine’s stuff is going quickly!  I typically lean more toward the side of making my own cards for V-day, but when they are this cute and inexpensive- yes please!  They have materials to make your own, too.  I know it’s not even February yet, but the section is almost cleared out at my local store so you might want to check yours out.

FIVE            HeatherButton

If you missed it yesterday, Nina from Flowers in my Hair and I are linking up on Tuesday and we would love for you to join us!  We hope it will be a great way to discuss our resolutions year-round and serve as motivation to not be just another statistic when it comes to breaking them.  After all, we made these because they mean something to us, right?  Great!  So will you join us??

Okay you know the drill- join me in linking up with AprilDarciNatasha, and Christina for your five!

Happy weekend, y’all!

Can you say “YUMMM” with me?!  Our second visit to Rx Restaurant & Bar did not disappoint.  We left full, but not overstuffed and had seconds in our hands for lunch the next day.  I cannot say enough about this restaurant.  We even had the same waitress and I am just floored by her knowledge of the menu [that changes daily] and other offerings they have.  If you’re in or around Wilmington or planning to stop through in the future, you must try this charming place.  This experience was certainly the highlight of our weekend since we both worked, and it was a great gift to ourselves for our birthdays.  {also pictured bottom left: a small part of my birthday breakfast Matt made- bacon pancakes!! he knows me so well!}

I hope your weekend adventures were perfectly delightful!  Just think, tomorrow is already Hump Day!

It’s Friday, FRIDAY!

Y’all, it’s finally Friday this week!  It is my first Friday off of 2014.  To make it better Matt and I both have this weekend off and we have lots of house to-do’s on the list.  I really cannot wait!  Ah, adulthood.

Right- so getting right to my FIVE for today- as always linking up with AprilDarciNatasha, and Christina.

It may be a little surprising, but I am so looking forward to the Real Simple challenge I wrote about here.  And it’s funny how this week has somewhat prepared me for next- as if in anticipation of the Get Real Week.  Exhibit A:

love this buddy, but sometimes I could ship him off free of charge to the first taker.  Then he suckers me back in with that sweet face.  Shoot.

This was our dessert last night and it took less than 5 minutes total.  For a girl who loves to bake, that’s my kind of treat.  I can’t take the credit for it, though- hop on over to visit Laura from The Reedy Review to find out all about it.  Seriously, this might make a regular appearance in our home and next time I’ll be prepared with some vanilla ice cream!

Along with the rest of the East coast, it has been unseasonably cold this week.  Like brrrrrrrrrr (of course, now it’s moving into the upper 60s but such is life).  I was so happy to have picked these pretties up on sale last week, preparing me to brave the extreme temps in style.

Go grab ’em up here.  I am of the opinion you can never have enough fair isle sweaters in your closet- it’s a timeless look.  These are super warm, comfy, great for layering, and keep well.  Don’t pass them up online, use code ONSAVENOW for an additional 15% off (my local store was all out).  You’re welcome!

I have been doing this devotional all week- let me tell you!  It blows my mind how simply switching focus in the morning from myself to my husband causes me to love him better.  This devo draws the beautiful parallel between God’s love and pursuit of us to that in our marriage.  It’s not too late to start if you haven’t already.  I highly recommend it!

We finally have some social dates on our calendar again!  The holidays about wiped us out and it’s been just me and Matt here since.  Now we’re ready to venture out into Wilmington again and enjoy our city.  Cheers to the weekend!!

Hope y’all have had a fancy Friday- any fun plans for the weekend?

xoxo, heather

It’s All About the Food

We spent last Saturday out downtown and the weather couldn’t have been more beautiful.  It was unseasonably warm, but breezy, and it made for the perfect opportunity to eat outside at one of our favorite local restaurants.

Wayfarer Deli is an adorable, quaint bistro owned by a talented couple, Carey and Ron. Their menu is made from all fresh ingredients and the combinations are always playful and on point.  We began with drinks- I had a delicious red sangria.. I cannot say enough.. and Matt got a cinnamon hard cider.  As for food, [because that’s what we’re really here to talk about] I normally get the Zapp’s chips with my sandwich [waddup, Allison?!], but this time I forced myself to get the s’mac and cheese so I wouldn’t mooch off Matt’s plate.  It didn’t disappoint.  Matt got their famous bison burger, this time made to taste like Thanksgiving dinner on a bun.  AMAZING.  I’m not kidding, I took one bite and had to slow down and remember to breathe.  I don’t know how that boy finished that burger. We walked around, enjoyed some Kilwin’s ice cream and caught some football [thank you, Auburn] before heading to dinner.

I was so excited about trying this new restaurant- Matt surprised me with this place last week and I’d since heard wonderful things! We got all fancied up and went to Rx Restaurant & Bar.  I totally nerded out about the name, menu, decor, location, et cetera.  Being a pharmacist, I love when places play on the different themes of my profession; but not only that, the food was all local and had a southern twist.  Thank the Lord for the South, right?  We started with some drinks off the ‘elixir menu’ [love it].  I had the ‘sauced apple’- I was nervous it would be too sweet, but the combination of the bourbon and muddled apples made for a perfectly light taste to compliment my meal.

We then enjoyed the oyster appetizer coming from our local Topsail beach.  The raw oysters were deliciously briny, and the chef topped them with a jalapeno- apple mignonette and muscadine sorbet.  Hello, heaven.  It didn’t take long before everything on the plate had vanished and we were ready to tackle our entrees.

Matt chose the NY strip with turnips, radish, shiitake mushrooms and kale.  That strip was oh so tender and perfectly medium-rare.  What a beautiful pink color!  I stepped out of my comfort zone and picked the duck paired with hoppin’ john, charred green onion and sour apple mostarda.  I had to stop myself from licking the plate.  Everything was so delightful and came with generous portion sizes.

We were able to split a dessert and went for the ‘sinful’ chocolate brownie covered in hot fudge and their homemade ice cream.  I even had a cup of coffee to add a nice exclamation point to the whole experience.

It was enough the food was decadent, but our waitress was so nice and equally knowledgable about the menu, how each item was cooked, and from which vendor they came.  Needless to say, we are thrilled to find another local place to frequent and props to my sweet husband for knowing me so well!

First things first

This has been a long time coming- my blog, a way to document and remember my precious memories, an avenue for gathering my interests, for celebrating life’s victories.

I cannot wait.

My husband, Matt, initially expressed his hesitation.  Who doesn’t evaluate the pros and cons of becoming vulnerable to the interwebs?  I’ve witnessed both the positive and negative impact of such transparency, so if for nothing else but my enjoyment of writing- here goes.

What is the Port City Prescription?

Flashback to 2012.

In a matter of a month, I earned a Doctorate of Pharmacy, accepted a full-time pharmacist position, and moved from the home I’d always known to a city hours away {alone}.  The idea of moving to a new city by myself was daunting for this generally naive, small town girl.  Not that Wilmington, NC is this huge bustling metropolis, but it’s certainly more of a melting pot of cultures compared to rural South Carolina.

In less than a year since, I’ve married my best friend and we’ve purchased our first home together.  Talk about a whirlwind.  Life has been so good, so very sweet.  I miss my family to pieces.  My best friends are scattered all over the country.  We’re still discovering this new, quirky city.  We’re slowly {but surely} growing our community here.  In all of life’s changes over the last year God has kept his promises.

The Port City Prescription was just what the ultimate doctor ordered, just what I needed to go out on my own, build my confidence, and make a home away from home with my love and our pup.  This adventure in life is just beginning for us and the ride gets faster every day- I hope to occasionally sit back and breathe it all in- and to always be thankful for all of life’s treasures.
