The Wrong Side

It’s Monday. ¬†And today- I woke up¬†

on the wrong side  of the bed.  We had a relaxing, fun weekend.

I accomplished most everything on my to-do list.  We received another good

word of the Risk series at church yesterday.

By all accounts it should be a good day.  But when

I turned over this morning, I could just feel it.  My to-do list was already

running in my head- as if it had been generated while I was

still asleep. ¬†That’s just not fair, right?

I sat in silence while eating breakfast, even though my

husband was sitting next to me.  How could I already feel behind

only 30 minutes into being awake?  I just needed grace.  When

Matt asked what was wrong- that’s all I could say, “Today, I just need grace.”

And grace he gave. ¬†I’m talking about tying my second shoe when

I was clearly having trouble with the first. ¬†[Yes, he did that. ¬†Yes, I’m a mess.]

Giving me a hug and an encouraging butt tap to send me on my way.

He has gotten so good at it,

this whole grace thing.  Thank God I

have a shining example right at home of

the grace he extends to us with each new morning.  Or in my case, every 30 minutes

of some days.

bold grace

Ever had a day like this when you just needed grace?  How did the Lord renew your spirit?

ps. ¬†Don’t forget to join our linkup tomorrow to revisit our resolutions! ¬†I hope to see y’all there! ¬†More info here.

Y’all- I’m ecstatic that it’s Friday. ¬†I am, really. ¬†And this is a happy post- but am I the only one who bawled my eyes out last night watching Parenthood?! ¬†Matt and I love Julia and Joel and to be honest, we felt like we related to them a lot- but they are breaking my heart right now. ¬†Come on, Joel!

Okay now that’s out of my system- let’s do this!

ONE I am SO EXCITED because our annual college girlfriend trip is officially on the calendar!!! (!!!!!) My sweet friends live all over the country now and I have been pleasantly surprised with our ability to keep up with each other.  We meet every other week on Google hangout if we can make it, but being able to squeeze their necks is something I crave.  The super fun part for me is they are coming to Wilmington!!  Some with baby in tow!!!  I cannot wait to play hostess and show them around my new home.  No amount of exclamation points can accurately describe my joy in anticipation.

This¬†came in the mail this week. ¬†Let’s just call it a birthday gift to myself. ¬†Y’all know how much I wanted this/ needed any kind of planner to stay organized. ¬†Then, Brittany posted there were only 4 remaining. ¬†I jumped on that one! ¬†And now it’s here and it’s glorious. ¬†Yay!

It is supposed to be frigid, but sunny weather here this weekend [by my standards]. ¬†Along with my big girl pants- I’ll be donning lots of layers to brave the winter cold in hopes of exploring the area with my sweetie! ¬†Our weekends off together are usually few and far between so we try to make the most of it. ¬†I doubt there will be any beach walking since it is 4 times windier- but we will see what we can get into!

Have you been to the Target $1 section yet? ¬†Because the adorable Valentine’s stuff is going quickly! ¬†I typically lean more toward the side of making my own cards for V-day, but when they are this cute and inexpensive- yes please! ¬†They have materials to make your own, too. ¬†I know it’s not even February yet, but the section is almost cleared out at my local store so you might want to check yours out.

FIVE            HeatherButton

If you missed it yesterday, Nina from Flowers in my Hair and I are linking up on Tuesday and we would love for you to join us!  We hope it will be a great way to discuss our resolutions year-round and serve as motivation to not be just another statistic when it comes to breaking them.  After all, we made these because they mean something to us, right?  Great!  So will you join us??

Okay you know the drill- join me in linking up with April, Darci, Natasha, and Christina for your five!

Happy weekend, y’all!

Coast to Coast: a small world

Rewind back to May 2008. ¬†You will find a shy, naive, Southern college sophomore joining her Northern college peers [strangers] to go on mission in Rome, Italy with an organization called Campus Crusade. ¬†Let’s get one thing straight- going on this trip was¬†not¬†how I normally did things. ¬†I had n e v e r flown. ¬†I hardly ever did anything major unless I knew¬†one person there. ¬†

Going to Rome that summer was a huge leap of faith for me. ¬†Little did I know how I would be tested, challenged, and grown during those 5 weeks. ¬†My trip began in Chicago where I would meet the rest of my team comprised of college students from the Great Lakes Region [minus my one lone Southern sweetie, Court!]. ¬†Hello, culture shock. ¬†I’m talking no sweet tea and a bunch of people who informed me I could just put my own packet of sweetener in my own glass of tea. ¬†I knew I was in for a ride.

rome 1 rome 2 rome4 rome5 rome6

Five weeks came and went and I returned to the United States with something like 18 new friends; the kind of people who knew what it looked like to live out their faith, who valued honesty above flattery, and who I could meet again one day down the road and reconnect with seamlessly.

Insert Nina- the author of Flowers in my Hair. ¬†We had not really caught up since globetrotting back in 2008. ¬†The blog world reunited us, virtually, at least and I have so enjoyed getting to know her better- probably better than I ever knew her before. ¬†Only now she lives on the other side of the country, literally. ¬†We have toyed with the idea of hugging each other’s necks in person some time this year. But until then, we’ve come up with a fun link up, one I hope you will get a lot out of, too.

Remember those resolutions we made just a few short weeks ago? ¬†Remember those words we promised to focus on throughout 2014? ¬†What if we revisited them once a month to discuss our progress, which ones we’ve abandoned and some we’ve recently adopted? ¬†

I know we might be admitting our failures in an open forum, but also we’ll have the opportunity to celebrate our successes! ¬†I mean, honesty and accountability never hurt anyone, right? ¬†And how great will it feel to end 2014 knowing we kept our promises to ourselves and anyone else included? ¬†Who’s with us?!!

Beginning next Tuesday, January 28th, hop over to Flowers in my Hair or back here to link your post. ¬†We’ll host the last Tuesday of each month for all of 2014, so there will be plenty of opportunities to revisit your resolutions. ¬†I know I could use a time of reflection each month in the midst of the hustle and bustle of this beautiful life!

Looking forward to cheering you on for 2014!

ps- thank you x a million to Jessica over here for the beautiful button! ¬†Her designs here are so fabulous, plus she’s my sister so I think she’s pretty awesome!!

To DiY, or not to DiY

I have this love-hate relationship with DiY projects. ¬†I¬†love¬†how simple and inexpensive they can be to do yourself and I¬†love how many resources there are these days to give inspiration and how-to’s. ¬†Then, I¬†hate¬†(maybe not that strongly) when I spend time taking on these projects and they come out looking like I did it myself instead of the alternative, like I bought it.

This internal struggle (it’s really not that dramatic) is why most of the walls in our new house are still blank. ¬†Part of me knows I should not fill them all at once because our tastes in decor are still changing with every HGTV show we watch. ¬†The other part, however, just feels stuck trying to sift through all the ideas and deciding which are really worth the trouble and in which we should just invest.

In comes Pinterest.

I have browsed and browsed for wall inspiration- be it pictures, canvases, structures, detailing, etc.  Some of my finds I can tackle on my own, others have led me to excellent vendors online that I would be happy to support.

Check out my pinterest {linked to the images} for more details of the projects if you’re interested. ¬†Also, the bottom scripture canvases are from French Press Mornings, a blogger I began following recently. ¬†She has an etsy shop and as you can see, her work is beautiful (and influenced by Rifle Paper Co, and I think it’s clear that I have a love affair with them already). ¬†It’s going to be difficult to decide which I’d like to display since I can’t buy them all- but she also does Encouraging Wednesdays- when she provides a¬†free 4×6 download of the featured print and 40% off that print in her shop for the week. ¬†WIN WIN.

Any Pinterest DiY projects on your to-do list? ¬†I’d love to hear about some of your successful or failed projects. ¬†Share below!

Can you say “YUMMM” with me?! ¬†Our second visit to Rx Restaurant & Bar¬†did not disappoint. ¬†We left full, but not overstuffed and had seconds in our hands for lunch the next day. ¬†I cannot say enough about this restaurant. ¬†We even had the same waitress and I am just floored by her knowledge of the menu [that changes daily] and other offerings they have. ¬†If you’re in or around Wilmington or planning to stop through in the future, you must try this charming place. ¬†This experience was certainly the highlight of our weekend since we both worked, and it was a great gift to ourselves for our birthdays. ¬†{also pictured bottom left: a small part of my birthday breakfast Matt made- bacon pancakes!! he knows me so well!}

I hope your weekend adventures were perfectly delightful!  Just think, tomorrow is already Hump Day!

Rounding out the Week

Good Friday morning to y’all! ¬†

It should come as no surprise that I’m back linking up with¬†April,¬†Darci,¬†Natasha, and¬†Christina¬†for today’s Five on Friday. ¬†Let’s be honest, it is always nice to have some consistency in life ūüôā

Screen shot 2014-01-17 at 7.42.49 AM

I¬†kind of participated in the Real Simple #rsgetreal challenge this week. ¬†I say that because, well, I even slacked off with that. ¬†Either that or I had the perfect example to represent a day’s challenge and I would find it gone, taken care of, put away thanks to my husband. ¬†It’s hard to say if I was happy about it or not ūüôā ¬†I did, however, appreciate seeing everyone else’s real life captured- and to my fellow type A newlywed wife struggling to always get it right I say, “we’re not the only ones!”.

Two-¬†Did you guys see Downton Abbey this week?! {POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT} Because I… I just can’t. ¬†Ball my eyes out for poor Anna. ¬†You guys, it seriously just broke my heart. ¬†And then I tried to talk about it with Matt and I got the usual look, “can we talk about what happened in real life?”. ¬†Shoot.

¬†Three-¬†Matt’s birthday was on Wednesday and I so appreciate everyone joining with me to wish him a happy one! ¬†I have always been of the opinion that it doesn’t matter stranger or friend, it feels special being wished a happy birthday by someone on your sweet day- and you guys delivered. ¬†I passed on the sweet messages to him and we enjoyed a delicious dinner at home topped off with the secret family recipe for red velvet cake- his birthday fave. ¬†

photo 1

Four-¬†My birthday is TOMORROW!! ¬†Needless to say, I am super excited! ¬†I have to work [and will sadly be missing a sweet friend’s wedding- best wishes, you guys!] but we are headed to dinner as soon as I get off. ¬†We will be returning to the Rx Restaurant you read about here¬†and I cannot wait! ¬†Rest assured I will have¬†something to report about the food situation and I trust it’ll be nothing but positive. ¬†Cheers to 26!

Five- In regards to number 4- a few birthday presents have found their way in my mailbox this week.  The sweet cards and gifts have made my week!  Then I got THIS!

Screen shot 2014-01-17 at 7.45.58 AM

I know it’s already halfway through the month but close enough- you might remember this from my gift guide for Christmas. ¬†Thank goodness my sister shares my love for Rifle Paper Co! ¬†I can’t wait for this to find it’s place in our home!

I hope your weekend is full of adventure and rest all at the same time!  Happy Friday!!

Red is for Love

Valentine’s Day typically takes a backseat in mine and Matt’s relationship. ¬†We have hardly gotten over our anniversary, Christmas, our dating anniversary (it’s okay to still celebrate once you’re married, right?),¬†both our birthdays, and then boom! ¬†Valentine’s Day. ¬†I’ve always found it difficult to know what to do for Matt.

Honestly, I would love some beautiful flowers (so cliche), maybe a card… dinner? ¬†We are both pretty much over it. ¬†That doesn’t mean, however, that I don’t love donning some red, pink, purple- whatever- to at least feel somewhat festive.

Here are some pieces I have been crushing on recently (and they’re ON SALE) to get some ideas for VDay looks, no matter what our plans.

Or if you’re looking for a more relaxed look:¬†

jacket // shirt // jeans // heels

I just recently picked up that jacket above and I have worn it out already!  It has done triple duty with some outfits- I have a bad habit of doing that- but it just goes to show how versatile it is.  Also, the Loft has new styles on sale for 40% off and 60% off sale items.  Use code: GET40!

Anyone else excited for the holiday? ¬†Any items you’ve had your eye on?

This Guy

Can I just tell you a little about this guy?

Besides his obvious good looks, he is¬†the best. ¬†He has a servant’s heart of gold and works tirelessly to provide for and protect this family. ¬†He makes me laugh- sometimes at him but mostly with him. ¬†He drives me crazy to distract me from the running to-do lists in my head. ¬†He loves so well. ¬†He also fights so well- did you know that was possible? ¬†I never could have imagined someone who could keep up with me in an argument all while diffusing the problem that got us there in the first place. ¬†He celebrates the victories of others and encourages the best of everyone he encounters. ¬†He inspires me to be more patient, more loving, more forgiving and gracious everyday. ¬†

But today, especially, he causes me to be so thankful; so thankful for the gift he is in my life and in so many others. ¬†Today is his birthday! ¬†Won’t you join me in wishing him a great one?!

A good Word

This weekend was the best- the absolute best that I have had in a long time.  We had a few things planned but we were staying in town for all of it.  Work was mixed with play and it was the recipe for a blissful time with my little family.  I know today is the first day for the Real Simple: Get Real challenge but allow me, for just a moment, to ooze the joy I have pouring over from the weekend.

Here are some sweet pictures captured from the weekend:

photo 1 photo 2 image_1 photo 3 image_4 image_5 image_7 image_8 image_9 image_10

Also, we were able to go to church together. ¬†We have yet to formally move our memberships since being in Wilmington. ¬†We both love the church we attend, but let’s be honest. ¬†Working every other weekend doesn’t allow for dedicated attendance- and we both need/want this so much. ¬†So so much. ¬†Matt and I agreed to make a more conscious effort to stay in town as much as possible on our weekends off and to invest more into our city, our home, our church this year. ¬†This Sunday could not have been a more perfect time for us to get started.¬†

Our church commits to adopting one word for the year, either individually or collectively, to serve as a resolution of sorts.  Our pastor even co-wrote a book about it- My One Word.  As you might have read previously, I already have 5 main resolutions so I was not planning on having a word for the year.  Then, as if I should have ever tried to plan otherwise, I was smacked in the face with a word straight from God yesterday.

Screen shot 2014-01-13 at 11.00.43 AM

The title of our current series is¬†Risk.¬† Risk. ¬†A word that keeps me from doing more than I would like to admit. ¬†Matt and I were¬†just (I’m talking just the night before) discussing some pretty heavy decisions that could be made this year- weighing the pros and cons-¬†planning 14 steps ahead. ¬†Literally, two minutes into the introduction to the sermon, we were exchanging glances and smirking. ¬†We left church yesterday and laughed all the way home. ¬†God could not have spoken any more clearly to either of us.

Needless to say, I now have a word, and I didn’t even plan it. ¬†Naturally. ¬†I really should know better at this point. ¬†This word will be staring me in the face at each crossroad this year, big or small. ¬†Do I let myself be paralyzed by the risks associated with a decision or do I let what I¬†know to be true about my God allow me to make a more informed decision? ¬†The more I know about Him and how He is working in my life, the more my actions will be aligned with His.

I encourage you to check out the sermons here if you’re a planner like me, constantly trying to take the reigns and dictate the outcomes throughout your own life. ¬†

I’ll leave you with some thoughts/ quotes I jotted down:

Proverbs 16:9

“God rarely gives me anything more than the first step”

Luke 14

Judges 6/7

“You need to plan; not to control the outcome but to know what the next step of faith is”

Do any of you have a word for the year? ¬†Similar struggle with planning? I’d love to hear your take on this!

xoxo, heather
